  1. The Elephant Rope – Belief

There was a particular man who visited the elephant’s camp and realized that the elephants weren’t cages. On discovering why he later realized all that holding the elephants from running free was just a short rope tied to their legs to another short pole. Surprised at what he saw, he wondered why the elephants never used its strength to break free, that’s just a tiny piece of robe and pole, the man wondered.

Still not satisfied with what he saw, he decided to approach a nearby trainer and inquire why the elephants have never tried using their strengths to break free. The trainer answered and said

“when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”

So in simpler words, the elephants over time adopted the belief that it was impossible to escape, hence they stayed tied.

Moral:

In life we many of us have adopted the belief that most times can’t be achieved, we must therefore break the circle of belief, and realize that nothing is impossible to do.

In a small town in Italy, a businessman who had a small business was reported to be owing a loan-shark a huge sum of money. The loan shark is said to be quite old and not good-looking, but the twist to the story was that he liked the businessman’s daughter.

And so the old man decided that the only way the businessman would pay up his dept is to allow him to marry his daughter. As intended, the idea was not a pleasant one to the businessman, hence a game was played.

The loan shark said he would place to pebbles into a bag, one black, and one while. The deal was, the businessman daughter would have to pick a pebble from the bag, and white would mean the Father’s dept is cleared with no marriage while the black would mean dept cleared with marriage.

The meeting is held on a pebble-strewn path, the loan shark reached for the floor and picked two pebbles. Whilst he was picking them up, the businessman daughter noticed he picked two black pebbles. The loan shark then asked the daughter to pick a pebble from the bag. She had three options available to her:

  • Decide not to pick any pebble
  • Pick both pebbles and expose the cheating loan shark
  • Pick a pebble knowing it is black and free her dad from his dept.

She decided to pick a pebble and immediately dropped it among other pebbles. And said to the loan shark “Oh, how clumsy of me. Never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked.”

The loan shark knowing that he would be caught for cheating had to play along and pretended she picked the white pebble.

Moral:

Life may offer us limited options to most of our problems but there certainly a million other options available to us. Regularly try to think outside the box, there are other better options there.

The judge asked, “Then how do you weigh the butter?”

The farmer replied and said

“Your Honor, long before the baker started buying butter from me, I have been buying a pound loaf of bread from him. Every day when the baker brings the bread, I put it on the scale and give him the same weight in butter. If anyone is to be blamed, it is the baker.”

While he was there, his wealthiest nobles passed and didn’t do anything to the obstacle, rather they complained of how the king was a bad ruler to allow such on the road.

Then came a peasant with vegetables on his head. On seeing the obstacle, he decided to let down his vegetables and try moving the boulder out of the road. Not sure he could do it alone, he struggled with the obstacle but was determined to not give up. Eventually, he finally achieved his goal, and the boulder was removed from the road.

On trying to carry his vegetables, he saw a purse where the boulder was. It contained coins and a letter from the King, which says the money was for whoever removed the boulder out of the way.

  1. The Butterfly – Independence

On a faithful day, a man accidentally found a cocoon of a butterfly. As days went on, the man discovered they were an opening. He had to sit and watch as the butterfly struggled for its independence. It literally tried to free its body from the cocoon. But all to no avail the butterfly decided to stop.

The man sat and wondered why the butterfly would give up so easily, he then decided he would help the butterfly. He took scissors and stripped the cocoon open for the butterfly to come out easily, which it did. But something went wrong. The butterfly came out but couldn’t fly. The body was swollen with tiny wings.

The sad for hours watching and hoping with time it wings will grow out to enable the butterfly to fly its way up. But that never happens. The butterfly spent its entire life crawling on the floor with a swollen body and tiny wings.

Tho with good intentions, but the man never knew the tight cocoon and the butterfly fight for independence was God’s way of making the butterfly wings grow by forcing the fluid to the wings. This will adequately aid the butterfly to prepare for flying.

As humans, we should all strive for our self-independence, not all help we get from people will do us good, most will cause more harm in the long run. Learn to always for independence.

Just on the first day alone, the boy nailed 37 into the fence and subsequently kept nailing every day until he started to control his anger. The little boy discovered it was easier to control his anger than to nail the fence. He eventually stopped getting angry and therefore nailed no more.

He decided to tell his father about his achievement, and the father instructed him to start pulling the nails off the fence each time he controlled his anger. The little boy eventually all out and told his father. The father then led him to the fence and said

“you have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there.”

The boy grew a little upset and requested he wants that particular dog. The man tried countering the boy but to his surprise, the little boy rolled up his trousers to show the shop owner his twisted crippled legs that is being supported by a metal brace.

The boy in a calm tone replied to the shop owner and said “Well, I don’t run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands!”
