How to Apply for a Law Internship as an Undergraduate
What is an Internship in Law Firms and How Does it Actually Work?
For some law firms, interns are a way of getting new lawyers to work for free. For others, they are an opportunity for law students to gain experience in the legal field.
The internship process is complicated and can be a source of frustration for both the intern and the firm. Some firms require interns to work more than 40 hours a week, while others may only require 30 hours a week. Some firms will only allow one intern per year while others will allow multiple interns per year. The amount of time that an intern spends at the firm varies depending on their level of commitment and their relationship with the firm’s partners.
Some firms have strict rules about what they expect from their interns, while other firms have less stringent requirements. It is important to note that not all law firms offer the same compensation packages, especially when it comes to their package for junior associates.
Different Types of Legal Internships
Legal internships are a great way for students to get a foot in the door of the legal industry. There are different types of legal internships that you can choose from depending on your focus and career goals.
There are three main types of legal internships:
1) summer associate programs,
2) externship programs, and
3) full-time positions.
What is a law internship?
A law internship, according to Wikipedia, is a limited amount of work experience offered by a law firm/Chambers to law students or graduates for a length of time, usually 2-3 months. An internship in law can be paid or unpaid. While some companies require payment before enrolling students for internships, others provide this service for free. As a result, some law firms pay their interns and others do not.
Why you need an internship experience
Below are some of the benefits of an internship at a law firm:
An internship with a law firm provides students with valuable insight into the practice of law.
Students often overlook the fact that law is a very practical career. The practical side of law is more important than the theoretical side. You may not realize this until you are offered an internship at a reputable legal firm. It may surprise you to learn that the practice of law differs significantly from what you were taught in school. This is why, in order to excel in this field, you must have a lot of experience.
Internships usually help to consolidate a CV and allow you to get some valuable experience.
Internships are clearly one of the best strategies to improve your resume. I didn’t have any internships to add to my CV before I applied for my first one. In fact, I believed my CV fell short of the required standard. However, after completing my second internship and receiving two internship certificates from some of Nigeria’s most prominent legal firms, I was able to publicly display my CV.
You will agree with me that one of the variables examined by employers in the legal market when hiring lawyers is experience. You can only beat other lawyers in your country by accumulating as many experiences as possible while in school.
Internships allow people to gain experience and expand their opportunities in the workforce.
I stated at the outset of this article that some law firms do not hire lawyers who have not completed an internship. This is understandable given that law is a practical profession. Employers believe that students who have had a lot of internship experience will be able to handle legal issues better than those who haven’t. This is undeniably correct.
You might be surprised to learn that some law companies will not hire lawyers without internship experience, even if they had the top marks in school. Internship is a requirement for all lawyers, believe it or not.
Internship fosters learning:
The most significant reason to apply for an internship now is that you will get a lot of knowledge from the experience. I’ve worked as an intern at a few law firms, so I know precisely what I’m talking about. In my second year of university, I completed my first internship and learnt things that I had not been taught in school.
To be honest, if you really want to learn a lot, you should apply for an internship right now. The most noticeable aspect of learning in a legal office is that you may ask questions of the lawyers and receive thoughtful responses.
We went over what a law internship is. Now that you know how important it is, Let’s take a look at how to apply.
How to Apply for a Legal Internship in Law Firms
1. Select the law firm you want to work for:
First and foremost, you must choose which law firm you wish to join. There are hundreds of legal firms and chambers in your country where you can apply for an internship. In Nigeria, for example, each state has roughly 50 law companies. It should be noted, however, that among the hundreds of law firms, some are more prestigious than others.
Top tier legal companies, medium law firms, and small law firms are the three sorts of law firms. Interns in top-tier law firms are usually paid, but they are in high demand. They are well-known law firms with a long history. Medium legal companies, as the name implies, are neither too big nor too tiny. They are also highly regarded. Finally, tiny law firms are those that have recently entered the legal profession. They normally have 2-10 employees, and applying for an internship at this type of company makes it easier to get accepted.
Following the foregoing, it is clear that 99 percent of law students will wish to apply for internships at reputable, well-known firms that will most likely compensate their interns. However, in my opinion, if you have never done an internship before, this is not a viable alternative. Because most top legal firms don’t have time to educate their interns everything they need to know, this is the case.
Top tire legal firms may not want to delegate minor jobs to interns because they are well-known and respected. Interns, they believe, lack experience and are more prone to make mistakes that will lead to failure. As a result, most law students who conducted their internships at major law firms learned nothing.
I personally advise you to apply for internships in medium or small legal firms in your area of residence. Before you leave the firm, these law firms will ensure that you have learned everything you need to know.
Most top law firms don’t want to accept inexperienced interns. It’s important that you gain experience in a smaller law firm first before applying for an internship with a top firm.
2. Research about your chosen firm:
The next step is to learn everything there is to know about the company. For example, you should know where the firm is located, whether it has a set schedule for receiving internship applications, the firm’s requirements, and, if possible, the administrative heads of the firm.
Okay! I understand how tough it may be to locate this information on the internet. I strongly encourage that you speak with students who have previously completed an internship with the firm. Alternatively, as practically every law practice now has a website, you can go to the firm’s website.
Knowing the information above can help you increase your chances of being approved. In Nigeria, for example, certain law firms only accept students from a specific tribe. So, as you can see, it is critical to research the firm before applying so that you do not waste your time.
It’s important to keep in mind that the information you acquire here will help you write your application and prepare for the interview.
It’s critical to do your homework about the company you wish to work for. Some law firms only accept first-year or second-year students, and others have a set period for accepting internship applications. You will not be aware of all of these needs unless you conduct study.
3. Prepare your resume and cover letter:
This is the main point of the article. Actually, I’m not going to walk you through the process of creating a resume and cover letter step by step. That is a subject for another day. I will, however, reveal some of the most important aspects of a decent resume and cover letter.
First and foremost, you should be aware that the firm does not anticipate you having a lot of prior expertise. Of course, they are aware that you are a student and have likely never worked before. So don’t be concerned if you don’t have enough experience to fill a page or two of your CV.
However, this does not negate the importance of maintaining a professional demeanor. Keep in mind that you are not applying for a job as a salesperson. Because law is a respectable profession, you must write as if you were a member of it.
For instance, you might be surprised to learn that certain legal firms value the name you used in your résumé and cover letter. So, after you’ve finished creating your resume, the name you selected to save your CV can help you increase your chances of being accepted. In addition, the structure in which you prepare your resume and cv is critical.
4. Submit your application to the firm:
Your application must now be sent to the legal firm. If you’re applying for an internship at a company with offices all over the country, you should go to the office where you wish to intern and submit your application there.
The reason for this is that sending your application to the firm’s website’s email address is pointless because it will be forwarded to the firm’s administrators. As a result, it’s possible that the administrators at the branch where you wish to intern won’t see it.
You may only send your application through email if the firm has only one location or if you are certain that it will be sent to the correct location. If you’re not sure, just get a brown file. Fill it with your résumé, cover letter, and other pertinent documents, then deliver it to the firm yourself.
I don’t use the internet to apply for internships. In my opinion, submitting a paper copy of your CV and cover letter to the firm is more professional.
5. Follow up the application:
Oh, yes! The application must be followed up on. Don’t just sit back and wait for a response from the firm. It is not an issue if you send them another email notifying them that you submitted an internship application and have yet to receive a response.
The majority of law firms do not check their mail on a daily basis. Even if they check, they may not respond since they have more pressing matters to deal with. I normally make a phone call to the firm’s secretary. After that, you will be informed as to why your application was not responded to, and it will be responded to as soon as feasible.
You might also go to the office of the person in charge of accepting internship applications and explain your situation.
By doing this, the company will recognize that you are serious about the internship and you will be given the opportunity most of the time, as long as you meet their requirements.
6. Prepare for an interview:
Last but not least, you must prepare for an interview. Yes, this is the final and most crucial section of the article. By preparing for it, you may encourage yourself and improve your confidence. Dress as a professional, speak as a professional, and walk as a professional. Make it clear to the firm that you are willing to collaborate with them.
You must also be prepared to answer easy questions about some of the law subjects you have taken in school. Before asking you any questions, the office in charge of interviewing interns will normally inquire about your academic level. So don’t be concerned; no one will question you about something you haven’t done. The questions are usually not too challenging.
