Netflix has changed the way we watch movies and TV shows. It’s a one-stop shop for our entertainment needs with thousands of titles to choose from. Netflix has over a hundred and fifty one million subscribers, and is one of the fastest-growing entertainment companies in the world. Netflix’s growth rate is so impressive that it has become the second largest company in terms of market value on Wall Street, just behind Apple Inc, and ahead of Google’s parent company Alphabet (Google).
Netflix confirmed their arrival in Nigeria with some Netflix original series in the works on February 25, 2020. They tweeted a photo of famous filmmakers from Nollywood industries like Mo Abudu and Richard Mofe Damijo to show how excited they are about bringing Netflix to our shores.
Netflix announced its coming into Nigeria with a few upcoming originals for us all to enjoy! The tweet features notable Nigerian directors such as Banky W., Adesua Etomi Wellington, Omoni Oboli, Ramsey Nouah, Kunle Afolayan and Kemi Adetiba and other Nollywood legends.
The Nigerian Netflix craze is not slowing down any time soon. The streaming giant recently acquired a lot of successful films made in Nigeria after the Lionheart movie was shown on their platform, which up to date has been only Nollywood film that they have accepted. Nigerians welcomed this new channel with open arms and many now live by its side as seen on YouTube where there are videos showing how people use it for entertainment purposes or even educational ones like studying languages from around the world through watching movies subtitled in other languages such as English, Spanish etc.

1. Namaste Wahala
The new Nigerian film “Namaste Wahala” is set in Lagos and follows the romantic escapades of two young lovers on a journey to find themselves. It is a romantic comedy film produced, written and directed by Hamisha Daryani Ahuja on her directorial debut.
The movie weaves together cross-cultural comedy, romance, family drama with zany characters as it unfolds against a backdrop that takes us through classic nuptials; from engagement parties where crashers are unwelcome to wedding rituals like cake smashing – not forgetting moments when love seems impossible such as during botched proposals or at times when couples take time out for reflection while others go about their lives.
2. God Calling
In God Calling, a Nigerian movie directed by bodurin sasore and released in 2018. the life of Sade is played out on screen through an unconventional encounter with god at this modern age where she lives her family’s faith
This story looks to be about redemption as it shows off these people who are trying to live their best lives despite struggles they face while living one day after another.

“Ojukokoro”, a Nigerian movie directed by Dare Olaitan and released in 2016, tells the story of what happens when one broke manager decides to rob his own petrol station. Along this journey he finds out that there are different kinds of criminals also interested in stealing these cash!

Seven is a Nigerian movie directed by Tosin Igho and released 2019.
One man, Kolade, has the unthinkable task to survive seven days in Ajegunle or lose his inheritance. There he will go through events that will either make or break him: from run-ins with thugs who want some easy money for their boss’ boxershorts; being caught up in an illicit love affair and having to choose between conscience and greed; running errands for gangsters one minute then dodging bullets as they hunt down those same gunmen just minutes later!

This Lady called life is a Nigerian movie Directed by Kayode Kasum and released in 2020. Aiye dreams of being a chef but she’s an abandoned single mother with no money or family to help her out? Whether Aiye chooses defeat, or fights against all odds to become the Chef of her Dreams will be revealed when this film comes out!
6. The Fisherman’s Diary
Ekah is set to break the rules against girls going to school in a village of fishermen, but her father Solomon has secrets that could get them both killed. Ekah’s determination becomes entangled with his past when she finds out he was once an activist fighting for education rights and women’s liberation who had been imprisoned by corrupt Nigerian officials for what they called terrorism.
The Fisherman’s Diary tells the story of 19-year old Ekah whose drive breaks society norms and gets her tangled up in some family skeletons!
7. Coming from Insanity (2019)
Written and directed by Akinyemi Sebastian Akinropo, Coming from Insanity is a Nigerian comedy-drama that follows the story of Kossi.
Kossi grows up to find himself in the art of making counterfeit money. However, all didn’t go as planned for him when he gets on EFCC radar. The movie stars Gabriel Afolayan Dakore Egbuson-Akande Damilola Adegbite Wale Ojo Odunlade Adekola Bolanle Ninalowo Tina Mba amongst others. It first released in Nigerian theatres on June 14 2019 then made its Netflix debut 9 September 2020
8. Bling Lagosians (2019)
The Bling Lagosians is a Nigerian Nollywood movie written by Anthony Kehinde Joseph and directed & also produced by Bolanle Austen-Peters. The film stars the likes of Elvina Ibru, Sharon Ooja, Osas Ighodaro, Toyin Abraham Helen Paul Alexx Ekubo Bisola Aiyeola Monalisa Chinda Samuel Perry (Broda Shaggi) Ayoola Ayolola Jide Kosoko amongst others.
The release date was June 28th 2019 with their mother Mopeloa played my Elivna Ibru starring as the wealthy family’s matriarch who tries to keep her children together while trying not to lose it herself during times.
9. Elevator Baby (2019)
The movie is a 2019 Nigerian drama film directed by Akay Mason. It features the likes of Timini Egbuson, Toyin Abraham, Shaffy Bello, Yemi Solade and others in various roles. The story follows Dare (played by timini), who becomes stuck with an unprivileged pregnant woman that later goes into labour while they’re both in an elevator together after he was given some drugs to knock him out for surgery on his eye which went wrong causing temporary blindness but she managed not only get them back outside before the alarms sounded off so he could avoid getting caught as well-as go through her contractions without realizing what’s happening then finally leave safely with their baby at hand! Now available on Netflix since June 19, 2020.
10. King of Boys (2018)
King of Boys is a Nigerian thriller movie co-produced and directed by the brilliant Kemi Adetiba following her directorial success with The Wedding Party film in 2017. You might be wondering, what’s so special about King of Boys? Well let me tell you this: its reunites Nollywood veteran Sola Sobowale, and actress Aduesua Etomi-Wellington from The Wedding Party movie! It also stars Nigeria rappers Reminisce as he played an essential role int eh film while Illbliss did too – both were excellent actors to watch out for. Other casts include Toni Tones, Jide Kosoko osas Ighodaro, Akin Lewis, Demola Adedoyin, Sani Muazu, and Sharon Ooja amongst others.
The film released on October 26, 2018, and It made its Netflix debut a year after its cinematic release.
11. Your Excellency (2019)
Your Excellency is a comedy movie about Nigerian actor and businessman, Chief Olalekan Ajadi (played by Akin Lewis), who has contested for the post of president. The film stars Funke Akindele as well as Alex Ekubo, Shaffy Bello, Osas Ighodaro or Eku Edewor among others -it premiered in cinemas on December 13th 2019 before being released on Netflix- July 10 2020.
12. Living in Bondage: Breaking Free (2019)
Living in Bondage 2 is a Nigerian supernatural movie directed by Ramsey Nouah. It’s the sequel to Nollywood classic Living in Bondage film from 1992 and stars Kanayo O. Kanayo, Enyinna Nwigwe, Kenneth Okonkwo, Muna Abii, and Swanky JKA amongst others.
The movie received 11 nominations at AMVCA 2020 awards show with seven of them won including Best Overall Movie award for its November 8th release date as well as another two being awarded on May 17 during its Netflix premiere after it premiered in theaters back when it first came out last year.
13. Sugar Rush (2019)
The movie, Sugar Rush is out now on cinemas. The film centres around three sisters who found $800 million and got into a series of problems by deciding to pick up the cash – don’t worry; they did manage to spend some while solving their own personal issues as well!
The latest Nigerian made blockbuster has just been released today in theatres nationwide. It stars Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Bisola Aiyeola, Bimbo Ademoye among others.
The movie release was on the Christmas day in 2019, and it is the fourth highest-grossing Nigerian film of all time. It later released on Netflix on July 3, 2020.
14. Kasanova (2019)
Kasanova is a Nigerian romantic comedy movie starring Wale Ojo, Ireti Doyle, Abayomi Alvin and Ruby Akubueze. The film tells the love story of a young man (Eli) and his girlfriend’s mother(Karen). Eli has to deal with not only their relationship but also competing for Karen’s attention against other suitors vying for her hand in marriage. It was released on September 13th of this year before making its debut on Netflix June 26th 2020.
15. Merry Men 2: Another Mission (2019)
The movie recalled the likes of Ramsey Nouah, Ayo Makun, Williams Uchemba, Ireti Doyle and others. It also introduced Ufuoma McDermott for an important role.
The Merry Men are back in business with a successful blockbuster released last year- ‘Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons.’ Following the events from that film; they are up to yet another mission as seen on this new release!
The movie had its theatrical release on December 20, 2019, and made its Netflix premiere on June 5, 2020.

Starring the likes of Ramsey Nouah, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Toyin Abraham, Nancy Isime, Ayo Makun and others, The Millions movie had its initial release in Nigerian cinemas on August 30, 2019. It later made a premiere on Netflix with the help of Ramsey Nouah and others who starred as thieves planning to steal from an apartment that contains 42 million dollars belonging to a politician.
17. Black Rose (2018)
Black Rose is a drama from Nigeria about the life of an attractive woman named Rose. She’s good at heart but falls in love with Desmond, who changes her for better and worse. Released on August 30th 2019 to theatres, it made its Netflix debut this year-August 21st 2020
18. Hire a Woman (2019)
Hire a Woman is yet another Nollywood rom-com movie currently available to watch on Netflix. The film was produced and directed by Chinneylove Eze and Ifeanyi Ikpoenyi, starring the likes of Uzor Arukwe, Nancy Isime, Bellinda Effah, Big Brother Naija’s Erica Nlewedim, Alexx Ekubo., etcetera. It’s worth mentioning that it later made its worthy release on Netflix in June 24th 2020.
19. October 1 (2014)
October 1 is a dark psychological thriller Nollywood film that narrates the story of Danladi Waziri, played by Sadiq Daba. It was written and produced by Tunde Babalola with Kunle Afolayan directing it. The movie stars some Nigerian talent like Kehinde Bankole, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Femi Adebayo amongst others playing roles in this feature length production from Nigeria’s number one producer company: Final Cut Media Limited
October 1 follows police officer Danldai Waziri as he investigates the death of a female individual before October first when there will be celebrations across Northern Nigeria for their country’s independence day.
The movie was released on October 1, 2014, in Nigerian Cinemas and is currently available on Netflix.
20. 93 Days (2016)
The movie is based on the real-life events of an Ebola virus outbreak in Nigeria that happened back in 2014. 93 Days, as it’s called for short, was released to Nigerian cinemas and then made its Netflix debut recently after a successful run at the box office.
It stars Hollywood actor Danny Glover with Nollywood actors Bimbo Akintola, Charles Okafor, Seun Ajayi among others who acted alongside him while talking about how Lagos state health workers successfully contained this deadly disease during these difficult times.

21. My Wife & I (2017)

What will you do if somehow switch bodies with your spouse? Ramsey Nouah and Omoni Oboli had that scenario in My Wife & I, a 2017 comedy movie written by Chinaza Onuzo. Apart from these two stars, popular actors like Adeolu Adefarasin (Ngozi Nwosu) are also featured on the film which was released to Nigerian cinemas on August 25th of last year and is currently available for streaming through Netflix.
22. Lara and the Beat (2018)
Nigerian music artistes Vector and Seyi Shay played lead roles in this movie. Lara and the Beat is a Nigerian drama directed by Tosin Coker about how two sisters are forced to draft their path to success after they were caught in the centre of some financial scandal with their parents’ media empire, starring Somkele Iyamah, Chioma Chukwuka, Uche Jombo, Sharon Ooja among many others.
The film premiered on September 14, 2020, on Netflix.
23. Survival of Jelili (2019)
The release of a new Jelili film is sure to make the audience laugh. The comedy movie, Survival of Jelili will tell the story about how Femi Adebayo (Jelili) finds himself in various hilarious situations while trying to find social relevance and fame. Funny actors like Toyin Abraham, Rachael Okonkwo, Desmond Elliot among others are cast for this great Nollywood project!
The comic story initially had released in Nigerian cinemas on December 6, 2019, after which it got its Netflix premiere on July 8, 2020.
